A Weekend in Albuquerque: Is It Worth the Trip from Denver?

A Weekend in Albuquerque Is It Worth the Trip from Denver

The first time I flew this route I paid $47 one-way on United and then spent $38 on an Uber from the Sunport to Old Town because I hadn’t checked a single thing about ground transport. That $38 stung more than the flight, which is exactly the trap this trip sets for you, because the airfare between Denver and Albuquerque is routinely so cheap that it stops being the point.

The flight itself is a bit under an hour in the air, about 562 km as the crow flies, which means the drive to Denver International, the security line, and the gate wait each eat more time than the actual flying. Cheap flights Denver โ€” Albuquerque may trim the cost, but you are still looking at a full morning for what is essentially a short hop, so the real question is whether Albuquerque’s worth that overhead, and the answer is yes if you go for the right reasons. I went for the Sandia Peak tram, which is genuinely unlike anything you get in Colorado, and for the green chile, which I still think about.

What I check first, second and third has changed since that first sloppy trip. First is the flight price itself, because it swings wildly, and I have seen this route at $39 and at $189 for the same weekend a month apart. Second is the rental car, because Albuquerque without one is a series of expensive Ubers, and the airport lots are full of perfectly fine budget options if you book ahead. Third is the hotel location, because staying near Nob Hill or Old Town changes the whole weekend, while the airport hotels will leave you wondering why you came.

Here is the thing nobody tells you about this trip: the flight is the easy part.

The hard part is the sun. Albuquerque sits at about 1,619 metres and the air is thin and dry in a way Denver’s is not, and a Saturday walking the petroglyph national monument will dehydrate you faster than you expect. Pack water like you are hiking, not sightseeing, and bring a hat even in spring, because the UV at that altitude is relentless.

  • Check the flight price first, but assume it will drop closer to the date
  • Book the rental car before you book the hotel, it anchors your whole plan
  • Look at flight times that land before 11am, the afternoon winds pick up
  • Bring a refillable bottle and a hat, the sun is the real enemy
  • Compare the total weekend cost against a Denver staycation before committing

The search I trust for this route shows the pattern clearly, and you can book Denver to Albuquerque for under a hundred round trip if you are flexible on the day. I flew out on a Friday night once and got a $63 fare that left at 8pm, which meant I ate dinner in the airport and landed in time for a late drink on Central Avenue, and honestly that worked better than the early morning flight I normally chase.

For the price of a dinner out in Denver you can be in a different state with better food and a mountain tram that makes you feel like you are in a postcard. Just do not repeat my mistake and forget to check what happens after you land, because the plane is cheap and the weekend is only cheap if you plan the rest of it.

The Friday evening departure, the $38 Uber, the green chile that ruined Colorado’s version for me permanently, that is the whole trip.
