The Hidden Cost of Making Customers Work Too Hard

The Hidden Cost of Making Customers Work Too Hard

Many entrepreneurs have learned that new customers are quite often gained not through bargain prices or flawless, quick service. In many cases, what makes them decide on a company is the ease of doing business with it. That means both clear communication around the available services and the ability to process requests without setbacks.

In other words, businesses have increasingly recognized the importance of the customer journey and how unexpected struggles with finding basic information are leading customers elsewhere. Let’s explore the most common points of friction and what business owners can do to reduce them and ensure a straightforward experience for their customers.

No Basic Information Means No Clear Starting Point

When customers open a business website, they hope to have a specific question answered as clearly as possible. It can pertain to matters as simple as service offerings, costs, coverage area, or available appointment times.

If this information is missing or hard to find, customers have to go out of their way to either search for answers across the internet or get in touch with the business directly. For some, this extra effort is not worth it, making them look for another business altogether.

To remedy this and keep customers interested, businesses can organize their website around the information most often sought by visitors. AI website generators help entrepreneurs with this task by building sites that follow user-friendly design practices and place sections for FAQ and business details in easy to find locations. An intuitive content arrangement combined with easily understandable service descriptions lets visitors get the full picture of what the business provides.

Users Lose Interest Without Direction

Just as accessing information should be kept simple, visitors should also find the steps to take afterwards obvious. Lack of direction towards booking an appointment or requesting a quote may be another obstacle that discourages potential customers.

In that regard, companies need to pay special attention to how accessible their website’s interactive elements are in both desktop and mobile versions. Navigation, contact forms, CTA buttons, and booking apps all behave differently across devices in order to fit different screen sizes. On smartphones’ smaller screens, it’s possible for the users to get lost within the website due to misinput or mismatched page elements, which adds unnecessary steps to their journey.

Research on website usability from the Baymard Institute further highlights the importance of information clarity and accessibility. Businesses need to establish what they want customers to do, and test the most likely paths users would take to complete that action. Doing so helps businesses detect potential difficulties or hassles a visitor may realistically encounter and fix such issues to ensure smoother navigation towards a sale, booking, or contact.

Waiting for a Response Becomes a Burden

Many customers treat waiting as part of the effort involved in dealing with a company. In most cases, they hope to receive a response from the business they attempt to contact in no more than one working day. Longer waiting times cause uncertainty, making it difficult for the customers to plan their further course of action.

There are two approaches a business can take to prepare customers and maintain responsiveness. On one hand, it can inform customers about possible response times and keep them informed about its availability.

On the other hand, currently available tools can introduce automation into the process in several ways, with instant confirmations being the basic first step. Businesses can also integrate a website chat, which allows for a quick direct contact with a team member. Another alternative is an AI chat, which can provide answers to the most common user questions, letting customers instantly learn if the business can meet their needs.

Convenience Is Part of the Service

Ultimately, it’s important to realize that customers evaluate businesses not solely on the quality of the service or product received. Their perception is also affected by how much is required of them to finalize a transaction.

Greater convenience can make all the difference between a customer gained and a customer lost. People looking for a particular service or product will have an idea of what the smoothest experience within the industry should be like. When faced with additional steps, the users may ask themselves, “Why do I need to do that here if it’s not required elsewhere?”

On the upside, most solutions that add convenience to the interactions between companies and visitors are affordable and straightforward to implement. Once a business realizes the significance of any potential obstacles hindering a smooth experience, figuring out how to remove those obstacles becomes relatively effortless. It’s often a matter of simple tweaks or new features and not complete redesigns or programming endeavors. Even small improvements to the customer journey can significantly increase the chance of customers’ initial interest turning into lasting business relationships.
