Explorer Builds Hit 105 in 2025 as Demand Soars for Adventure Yachts (Up from 58 in 2020)

The explorer yacht segment is experiencing rapid growth. According to industry analysis, the number of new-build explorer vessels has nearly doubled over the past five years. Builders and brokers report a jump from roughly 58 units in 2020 to approximately 105 in 2025. Reflecting a significant shift in ultra-luxury travel behaviour.

The global explorer yacht market size reached around US$7.3 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.1% to US$14.1 billion by 2033. Users of these high-spec vessels are not just seeking flagship luxury but expedition capability: ice-rated hulls, long-range fuel tanks, support tenders and adventure gear.

The motivations reveal the change. Ultra-wealthy clients increasingly favour remote cruising routes over traditional summer anchorages. They trade crowded marinas for anchorages off the grid, and plug-in spa time for sea-kayak dawn launches. That logic filters into downstream charter markets as well. Charterers are now more likely to plan trips that emphasise exploration, flexibility and seclusion. As one manifestation, travellers might select destinations where they can enjoy active sea-routes and private bays, for instance choosing to take boat trips in Milos as a gateway to lesser-known coves, anchor points and itinerary freedom.

From an industry-perspective this surge has implications. Shipyards are scheduling multi-year deliveries. Support yards are expanding and charter fleet operators are adapting staff training and logistics for off-grid cruising. Overhead is increasing, but the payoff is clear. A vessel that offers true expedition capability commands higher charter rates and longer bookings. The explorer segment is no longer niche. It is a fast-growing axis of luxury travel.

Kamnaki Maria, Reservation Manager at DanEri Yachts, provides this insight:

“Clients are increasingly interested in exploring off-the-beaten-path routes, secluded bays, and places that are harder to reach, rather than just popular destinations. When guests choose boating in Milos instead of standard hotspots they are embracing exploration. The build numbers reflect that desire: a luxury yacht today means adventure as much as comfort.”
